El Diario de un Loco ("Diary of a Madman") comes to Mexicali's Teatro del Estado on Friday, September 11, 2026 with two performances: 7:00 PM and 9:30 PM. It is a one-man play — a single actor carries the entire hour — and that is precisely the point: there is no ensemble to hide behind and no set doing the heavy lifting.
The play follows Leonardo Ivanovich, an ordinary civil servant who starts writing down what happens to him each day. At first it is office grievances and a love that is not returned. As the pages go on, reality starts blending with what he imagines, and the reader — here, the audience — realizes where this is heading before he does.
The source text is by Nikolai Gogol, published in 1835, and it still lands for an uncomfortable reason: the character does not lose his mind in a vacuum, but inside a bureaucracy that humiliates him daily. Sebastián Dezma, who both performs and directs, has said his aim was never to caricature mental illness but to build a character who earns empathy rather than pity. The production has racked up more than 400 performances touring the country. Performed in Spanish.
