Horror theater · Two performances · Teatro del Estado
Wednesday, September 23, 2026 · Shows at 7:00 PM & 9:15 PM · Teatro del Estado
Time until the first show
El Sótano ("The Basement") comes to Mexicali's Teatro del Estado on Wednesday, September 23, 2026 with two performances: 7:00 PM and 9:15 PM. This is horror theater done properly — one of the few Mexican productions that commits to the genre, with set design, lighting, practical effects and video mapping all working toward the scare.
The story follows Ana Müller, who after a separation rents a cheap apartment in an old building on the edge of town. She moves in with her daughter Isa, a girl who stopped speaking the day her father left. The building's caretaker, Damián, starts hovering a little too close to the child. And something beneath the floor begins to make itself known.
The play was written and directed by Esteban Román and is based on a story by Koji Suzuki — the Japanese author behind Ringu, the novel that gave us The Ring. It ran for six years in Guadalajara, premiered in Mexico City in October 2024 and passed one hundred performances before going on tour. Performed in Spanish.
