About the concert

The Filarmónica de Mexicali brings Juan Gabriel's catalogue to the Palenque del FEX on Sunday, September 6, 2026 at 6:00 PM. Worth saying up front: the Divo de Juárez died in 2016 — this is a tribute. The singer is Mario Pelayo, backed by the orchestra under artistic director Carlos Germán, the Ópera y Coro Sinfónico de Mexicali and the Mariachi Voz de América de Mexicali.

The production is open about where the idea comes from: it is modelled on the four nights in May 1990 when Juan Gabriel sang at the Palacio de Bellas Artes with Mexico's National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Enrique Patrón de Rueda. He was the first popular Mexican artist to take that stage with the National Symphony, and cultural institutions formally petitioned for the shows to be cancelled. He answered from the stage: "tonight I am happy, and I want to share a wish — that every popular artist gets the chance to come here, because this place was built with the people's money." The live album came out that December and is still among the most-played parts of his catalogue.

The Mexicali date falls nine days after the tenth anniversary of his death. And the orchestra playing it is local: the Filarmónica de Mexicali is a project built around young musicians from the city — the same orchestra that backed Yandel on his symphonic tour in August. It is a single performance, it runs two hours, doors open at 5:00 PM and it is suitable for all ages; the palenque has seating and air conditioning.

Getting to the Palenque del FEX

Palenque del FEX
Calle Río Nuevo #955, Mexicali, B.C.

A palenque puts the stage at the center of the ring with the audience all around it, split across the tiers: there is barely a "back row", though the view changes depending on your section. For a symphonic concert that works in your favour — the sound reaches evenly — and the venue has seating and air conditioning, which in Mexicali is no small thing. It sits inside the FEX fairgrounds, on Río Nuevo, minutes from the Centro Cívico. Doors open at 5:00 PM.
