The History of La Chinesca
In the late 19th century, hundreds of Chinese immigrants, mainly from Canton province, arrived at the arid Baja California border. They were fleeing racist laws in the United States and seeking opportunities in the cotton fields of the Mexicali Valley, working for the Colorado River Land Company.
To escape extreme temperatures exceeding 118°F (48°C) in summer, these pioneers built an astonishing underground city: a network of interconnected tunnels and basements that included hospitals, dormitories for 150 people, Buddhist temples, casinos, and even opium dens.
During American Prohibition (1920-1933), La Chinesca became a nightlife refuge, attracting visitors who crossed from California seeking forbidden entertainment. This golden era consolidated the neighborhood's unique identity.
