About the festival

Cometa Rock en el Desierto takes place on Saturday, September 5, 2026 at the Plaza de Toros Calafia, with Kinky, Fobia and Takón Machine on the bill. Doors are at 6:00 PM, early for a festival, and it makes sense: there are three bands and September in Mexicali is still hot, so most of the show lands after dark.

The line-up spans two eras of rock en español. Fobia are from Mexico City and from 1987: founded by Leonardo de Lozanne and Paco Huidobro, they split in 1997, returned in 2004 and are now part of the canon with "El Microbito", "Veneno Vil" and "Vivo". Kinky are from Monterrey, emerged in 1998 out of the Avanzada Regia scene, and were among the first Mexican bands to cross rock with electronica: "Más" ended up in ads and video games, and by 2002 they were playing Coachella.

The third act is practically local: Takón Machine are from Ensenada, formed in 2009, and they do not exactly play rock — they coined their own label, "cumbia costeñita", mixing cumbia with rock and funk, built for dancing. That is usually what warms the crowd up before the heavyweights.

The Plaza de Toros Calafia has its own character as a concert venue: an open-air ring right in the Centro Cívico, with the tiers wrapping around a stage set in the sand and the city skyline behind. It is one of the few places in Mexicali that holds several thousand people.

Line-up

Kinky

Monterrey, Nuevo León · since 1998

They came out of Monterrey's Avanzada Regia scene and were among the first to cross Mexican rock with electronica. Their track "Más" ended up in ads and video games, and they played Coachella in 2002. Eight albums, from the 2002 self-titled debut to "Fierrro" (2022).

🎵 ¿A Dónde Van los Muertos?🎵 Soun Tha Mi Primer Amor🎵 Más🎵 Hasta Quemarnos

Fobia

Mexico City · since 1987

Founded by Leonardo de Lozanne and Paco Huidobro. They split in 1997 and reunited in 2004; in 2019 they filled the Palacio de los Deportes for their 30th anniversary. Their signature was always irony and the eccentric, while the rest of rock en español went political.

🎵 Vivo🎵 El Microbito🎵 Veneno Vil🎵 Miel del Escorpión🎵 La Iguana

Takón Machine

Ensenada, Baja California · since 2009

The Baja California act on the bill. They coined the label "cumbia costeñita" — cumbia with rock and funk, made for dancing — and debuted in 2018 with a self-titled album. They are also known for their cumbia takes on other people's classics.

Getting to the Plaza de Toros Calafia

Plaza de Toros Calafia
C. Calafia 1096, Centro Cívico, Mexicali, B.C.

The Calafia sits right in the Centro Cívico, on Calafia street, minutes from the border crossing and the civic-commercial district. It is an open-air ring: the tiers wrap around a stage set in the sand, so the difference between sections is how close to the ring you sit. It starts at 6:00 PM and September in Mexicali stays hot well into the evening — dress light, bring water and a cap if you arrive early. Parking nearby fills up, so allow extra time.
