About the show

La Dama de Negro — the Spanish-language staging of The Woman in Black — returns to Mexicali's Teatro del Estado on Friday, October 30, 2026 with two performances: 7:00 PM and 9:15 PM. The date lands on Halloween eve, two days out from Día de Muertos, which is exactly where this production belongs.

It follows a man haunted by something that happened to him as a young solicitor. To be rid of it he hires an actor and stages the memory on a bare theater, forcing himself to say out loud what he would rather forget. As the rehearsal goes on, the line between what is being acted and what actually happened gets uncomfortably thin — and a woman dressed in black starts appearing where she should not be.

The script is Stephen Mallatratt's adaptation of Susan Hill's novel, and it runs on almost nothing: two actors, an all but empty stage, sound, light and the audience's own imagination doing the rest. Old-school stage horror, no digital effects. Performed in Spanish.

32 years of the same play

The Mexican version was translated and is directed by Rafael PerrĂn, and premiered on February 17, 1994 at the Teatro ArlequĂn in Mexico City. It has not stopped since: it holds the record for the longest continuous run of any play in Mexico.

The production, by Antonio Calvo and Carlos Bracho, counts 1,669 weeks and 8,739 performances, more than two million people through the door, 34 actors who have taken on its two roles and 16 different venues in the capital alone. The tour reaching Mexicali is the one celebrating that anniversary: 32 years.

Friday, October 30, 2026 at the Teatro del Estado, with two performances: 7:00 PM and 9:15 PM.

If you like horror on stage

The Teatro del Estado already hosted another horror play this year: El Sótano, on September 23. If you caught that one, this is its classic counterpart — same hall, far less technical machinery and a great deal more silence.
