About Mexicali Cathedral
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the main church of the Diocese of Mexicali and one of the most recognizable buildings in the historic downtown. You can spot it from a distance by its terracotta facade with white trim, the clock above the door and its single two-tier bell tower topped by a dome and a cross. Unlike most Mexican cathedrals, it does not face a plaza or sit next to government buildings: it closes off Reforma street at the corner with Morelos. It has a 4.7 rating from 3,216 Google reviews.
From small-town parish to cathedral
The parish was born with the city: it was founded in 1917–1918 and dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe on May 17, 1918. The building you see today is an early-1950s reconstruction; a plaque inside records that the Guadalupan Knights and Ladies donated the marble altarpiece in the Marian Year of 1954, and the church was consecrated on November 21, 1955 by Alfredo Galindo, bishop of Tijuana, "on the third anniversary of the visit of Our Lady of Loreto for the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Mexicali", according to the text the parish preserves. Three weeks later, on December 11, 1955, the Virgin was crowned there as "Queen of Labor".
On March 25, 1966, Pope Paul VI created the Diocese of Mexicali with the bull "Qui secum" and placed the bishop’s seat in this church; the formal erection as a cathedral came on October 17 of that year. Four bishops have served since: Manuel Pérez-Gil (1966–1984), José Ulises Macías Salcedo (1984–1996), José Isidro Guerrero Macías (1997–2022) and, since November 2023, Enrique Sánchez Martínez. In March 2026 the diocese celebrated its 60th anniversary here.
What you will see inside
The layout is a basilica: a central nave and two side aisles separated by round arches, lit by high windows and three crystal chandeliers. The main altar holds the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe over a mosaic background, with a crucified Christ to one side; a side niche holds Saint Joseph with the Child. The diocesan bookstore operates inside the same building. In November 2024 the bishop announced a three-stage renovation that began with the sacristy.
Visiting the cathedral
It is a living church: there is Mass three times a day Monday to Saturday and eight times on Sundays, all in Spanish, plus confessions and a Holy Hour on Thursdays. The parish does not publish opening hours outside of Mass, so it is best to arrive around those times or call ahead. It is three blocks from Callejón Chinesca and just over half a kilometer from the Mexicali I pedestrian border crossing; it has no parking lot of its own, but there are public lots 300–550 m away.
Guadalupe feast
December 3–12: pilgrimages, the torch, the bishop’s Mass at 11 PM on the 11th and "mañanitas" at midnight.
Holy Week
Palm Sunday procession and the Good Friday Way of the Cross at 10 AM along Reforma street.
Walking route
Chinesca, Casa de la Cultura, the Chinese Chef Monument and the Lerdo–Morelos pedestrian corridor, all within 500 m.
Before you go
Good to know
Come around Mass
No opening hours are published. On weekdays the 1:00 PM Mass is the easiest to plan around; on Sundays there is Mass roughly every hour and a half.
Better on foot
No parking lot. Use a downtown public lot (Jardín Tecate, Plaza Mexicali or Tecolote, 300–550 m away) and walk along Reforma.
Crowds in December
From December 3 to 12, pilgrimages and thousands of faithful arrive; vendors and rides fill the street. For a quiet visit, pick another month.
It is a place of worship
Keep quiet during services and ask before photographing weddings, baptisms or funerals.
⭐ What people say
“Very beautiful church, and huge. Easy to attend all kinds of Masses.”
— Jose Angel Guerra Singh · Google · February 2026
“We went with my daughter for her sacraments and it was lovely: they lit the candle, burned the palms, the church was dark, there was plenty of room and we were seated well.”
— Martha Lombera · Google · April 2026
“A small but beautiful cathedral; this downtown Mexicali attraction is worth a visit.”
— Daniel Cortés · Google · May 2025
“A pretty building in what used to be Mexicali’s historic center. Curiously, it is not on a plaza or zócalo, nor next to government buildings, as in most of Mexico.”
