About Imperial Garden
Imperial Garden is a Chinese restaurant on Avenida Madero in downtown Mexicali, a few blocks from La Chinesca. It has a 4.5 rating from 3,901 Google reviews, and it has the most recognizable storefront of the city's Chinese food scene: a Chinese-style portico with a red door, grey tiled roofs, white balustrades and terracotta warriors at the entrance.
Next to the building there is a koi pond that shows up in customers' photos, and inside the carvings and Chinese decor continue. Its website says that in January 2024 it was named one of the 250 best restaurants in Mexico by the Guía México Gastronómico, citing a La Voz de la Frontera article that quotes its owner, Pablo Abel Chee.
What to order at Imperial Garden
The website lists the house specialties as crispy partridge, pork belly, oven-roasted ribs, chef's eggplant, Sichuan fish and spicy octopus. In reviews, the carnitas coloradas (Cantonese red pork), the tea and the large portions, "for sharing", come up again and again.
The classic format is the set meals by package: shark-fin style soup, carnitas coloradas, chun cun (spring rolls), fried rice, beef with broccoli, breaded shrimp or pineapple chicken, depending on the package. Note that a July 2026 review says two people had to order two packages.
