Pez Gallo Sushi & Cevichería is one of the best-rated restaurants in Mexicali: its Calzada Cetys location has 4.9 stars from 5,543 Google reviews, and across its three locations in the city (Cetys, Justo Sierra and Jardines del Lago) it adds up to more than 9,300 reviews. It brings together Mexican-style sushi rolls and ceviche-bar seafood: aguachiles, tostadas, ceviches and seafood towers.
The menu has names with local flavor, like the Rumorosa roll, the Cachanilla Especial, the Taco del Desierto or the Guamuchilito. Reviews keep saying the same things: beautifully plated dishes, generous portions and service people remember by name; waiters like Oswald, Simón or Daniel come up again and again.
According to its own online ordering system, the best sellers are the Chacal Roll ($319 MXN), breaded and topped with salmon chicharrón; the Amor-Amor ($309), the classic California roll ($179), the Yakimeshi Mixto ($209), the breaded Cielo, Mar y Tierra ($249) and the Aguachile 5 Chiles ($199).
Aguachiles cost $199 and you pick the sauce: green, 5 chiles, Pez Gallo, ancla negra (black sauce), pink habanero or Mazatlán style. To share there is the Seafood Tower and the Molcajete Especial ($399), and the star dish is the Grilled Octopus ($749). Tacos run from $75 to $109: de Carreta, Gobernador, Costeño or del Desierto.
The Cetys and Justo Sierra locations open every day at 12:00 PM: Monday to Thursday they close at 11:00 PM, Friday and Saturday at midnight and Sunday at 10:00 PM. The Jardines del Lago location does not publish its hours on Google, so call ahead.
All three have the same menu at the same prices, accept cards and contactless payment, have free parking and a kids' menu, and you can order online at pedidos.pezgallo.mx. For private events there is a VIP room with reservation and a minimum spend.

We started with a mixed sashimi. The freshness and texture of the ingredients surprised me. […] Prices are not exactly cheap, but they are not out of reach either, considering the quality of the ingredients and the experience the place offers.
Excellent atmosphere. Excellent service 1000/10 (Oswald). The food was delicious. I came from Hermosillo just to try it and would come back without a doubt.
Oswald was an excellent waiter, he was quick, informative, and anticipated our needs. The food was great and the drinks were even better.
Excellent service. Simón took care of us. I gave the food 4 stars because the black chili sauce on the sushi was too salty. Everything else, the drink and the seafood guacamole, was delicious.
Very good service from Paulina and very tasty food; the tuna tostada was a little salty.
