About the lagoon
Laguna Xochimilco is a body of water in southern Mexicali, along Calzada Laguna Xochimilco next to the Xochicalli neighborhood. Together with Laguna México and Laguna Campestre it forms a single lagoon system, the same one that surrounds the Laguna México Ecopark.
A Colorado River delta wetland
A UABC study published in 2022 in the journal RECIT explains that the México–Xochimilco–Campestre lagoon system is part of the "Remnant Wetlands System of the Colorado River Delta", a Ramsar site (wetland of international importance) designated in 2008 that covers 127,614 hectares across Baja California and Sonora.
The same study notes that the system has been ignored by urban planning, even though it is the landscape with the highest visual quality in the area studied and has ecotourism potential.
What to expect
This is not a park with services: it is an open-access urban lagoon. It is at its best at sunset, when the sky is reflected in the water. The adjacent Parque Xochicalli is listed on Google as open 24 hours, but 2026 visitors describe it as run-down. If you want restrooms, playgrounds and boats, go to the Laguna México Ecopark, a few minutes away.
