Blanca Nieves is one of the oldest spots in downtown Mexicali: it opened in March 1948 on Avenida Reforma, a few steps from the Cathedral. It started as an ice cream parlor (nevería) and today it is a breakfast and Mexican food restaurant with a 4.4 rating from 2,549 Google reviews.
It was founded by Rubén Galindo, a lifelong merchant, and his wife Margarita López. According to the profile El Imparcial published in 2018, the nevería had first opened in Ensenada around 1946, but it was in Mexicali that it took root. The current location is about 30 meters from the original, and the business is still run by the Galindo family, now in its third generation. The "DESDE 1948" (since 1948) is still on display in the stained-glass door and the neon sign over the counter.
It is a classic downtown breakfast place: the desayuno norteño (northern-style breakfast), chilaquiles (reviewers order them with machaca, dried shredded beef), pancakes, eggs any style with beans and hash browns, and coffee. At lunchtime the favorites are the beef milanesa with spaghetti or fries, fajitas, enchiladas and guacamole, and meals start with chips and salsa and the soup of the day.
And because it began as an ice cream parlor, the finale is the nieves: ice cream sundaes, milkshakes (the strawberry one is among the most mentioned) and desserts. Many families who came as kids keep coming back for that.
It opens every day at 8:00 AM and closes at 9:00 PM, except Tuesdays, when it closes at 5:00 PM. Google estimates $200 to $300 MXN per person.
It has its own parking lot at the back, with a guard, plus street parking; it is wheelchair accessible, accepts credit and debit cards, has a kids' menu and does takeout. Being next to the Cathedral, it is a traditional stop after Sunday mass, so expect more people at that time.

Still a traditional place for breakfast or lunch downtown, near the Cathedral; everything is delicious and the ice cream is great. The staff is very friendly and attentive even when it is busy. It has its own parking lot at the back with a guard. We ordered the northern-style breakfast, chilaquiles and a dessert to share.
Had breakfast here and staff were very helpful and friendly. We don't speak Spanish and the staff who attended us went an extra mile to help us connect to WiFi so that we could translate the menu to English. A pleasant morning and lovely breakfast!
It has many years of prestige and the place is quiet. I'd give the food an 8/10. I also had a strawberry milkshake and it was very good. The service, honestly, leaves a lot to be desired: the waitresses looked unhappy and it felt like they wanted you to leave as fast as possible.
Someone should teach them how to make a cappuccino: literally "water with powder". It had been highly recommended to me but I don't see why; the hash browns are the packaged kind and the chilaquiles were very average. The only good things were the beans and the service; the staff was very kind.
